Leprechaun Pencil Hat Crochet Pattern

Green Leprechaun pencil hat against a white background.

Need a last minute make for St Patrick’s Day? I’ve got you covered with this fun Leprechaun pencil hat pattern. It’s a super quick project, perfect for stash busting and it makes me smile. Sometimes I think that some of my ideas are too silly to share but crochet is all about expressing yourself so I’m learning to just go with it.

I designed the hat to sit directly on the pencil so the ‘stem’ is hidden inside. My hat is pretty sturdy so I chose to leave it unstuffed but you could add some stuffing if you feel it’s not holding it’s shape well.

MATERIALS

  • DK Weight Yarn in green, gold and black
(I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Evergreen, Mustard Yellow and Pure Black)
  • 2.5mm crochet hook
  • Optional: Polyester fiberfill
  • Stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors

STITCHES/ABBREVIATIONS

  • sc – single crochet
  • inc – increase
  • BLO – back loop only
  • FLO – front loop only
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st/s – stitch/es
  • (…) – indicates stitch count at end of round
  • […] – repeat the instructions in brackets

NOTES

The pattern is written using US terminology and measures approximately 1.5″ (4cm) tall when using the materials listed.

Pieces are worked in a continuous spiral starting with a magic ring unless otherwise specified. Mark the first stitch of each round with a removable stitch marker.

After completing 5 rounds of the stem, try it on your pencil. The fit should be snug but still easy to get on and off. If it is too big or too small adjust your hook size accordingly and try again. Crochet the hat using the same hook size.

Stuffing is optional. If your piece is too flimsy, gently stuff around the stem before closing up completely.

PATTERN

HAT (starting in green)

R1: 8sc in magic ring (8)
R2: [Inc] x8 (16)
R3: [Sc, inc] x8 (24)
R4: BLO [sc] x24 (24)
R5-10: [Sc] x24 (24) – change to black in last st of R10
R11-13: [Sc] x24 (24) – change to green in last st of R13
R14: FLO sc, inc, [2 sc, inc] x7, sc (32)
R15: [3 sc, inc] x8 (40)
R16: 2 sc, inc, [4 sc, inc] x7, 2 sc (48)
R17: [Sl st] x48 (48)

Sl st in the back loop of the first sl st and fasten off invisibly. Weave in end.

Surface slip stitch the buckle in gold yarn over R11-13. Mine was 4 sl sts long by 3 wide.

Place the long part of the stem inside the hat and sew together using the leftover back loops from R14 of the hat. Stuff lightly around the stem if required (I left mine unstuffed) before closing up completely.
